Spinning Up Spin-Offs for Success

Mergers and spin-offs have become commonplace in the chemical manufacturing sector in an effort to create streamlined entities that are laser focused on meeting dynamic business challenges while delivering enhanced financial returns for both the “spinner” (AKA the parent company) and the new entities that are “spun” out.  While the financial benefits of these structural changes are historically quite significant, the necessary and critical re-engineering of their business processes and the implementation of new systems to complement their new corporate branding and identity can be difficult on the employees, customers and suppliers.

AmSty (a joint venture of Chevron Phillips Chemical and Trinseo) has positioned itself as a leading integrated producer of polystyrene and styrene monomer by optimizing production, marketing, supply chain and information technology capabilities to excel in the marketplace.  The company culture fosters new ideas, winning attitudes and behaviors by its employees, while staying vigilant to the importance of safety and environmental stewardship across all functions.  With a disciplined and focused approach to reducing costs and building value, CEO Brad Crocker is leading AmSty’s efforts to position the company for future success.

His vision includes a broad use of technology, data and analytics to fully understand and leverage real-time market dynamics while also maintaining a clear focus on operational excellence and organizational efficiency to drive growth and enterprise value.

Join Brad Crocker, CEO of AmSty, as he shares his perspectives on the importance of creating a common culture, technology’s role in profit optimization rather than as a reluctant cost, and how sometimes being on the edge of a cliff helps to drive refreshing clarity and acute focus.

Brad Crocker is President and Chief Executive Officer of Americas Styrenics.  He assumed this role in 2012 after serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Lawter, Incorporated.  Prior to his time at Lawter, he served as Vice President and General Manager for Hexion and Global Business Director for Arizona Chemical.

The Only Thing to Fear is Fear Itself: Embracing Change & Seizing the Opportunity of the Digital Transformation

The chemical industry is advancing at light speed and it takes a near demi-god to keep up with it! Change isn’t always easy, and without very strategic plans, clear communication, a transparent roadmap and the cultural support of all employees from the shop floor to the top floor, most change will be destined to fail. Join renowned Chief Information Officer, Keith Sturgill of Eastman Chemical, for this can’t miss kick off to Best Practices for Chemicals. Keith will share how Eastman and others are embracing technology advancements like the Internet of Things (IoT) and how they are seizing opportunities that are rapidly emerging. From developing an optimized supply chain, to enabling real-time transparency from when raws are procured, through the production process to purchase and then ultimately delivered to the customer. Hear how for the first time in the industry’s history, leaders from every function in the business can accurately and in real-time pivot to make efficiency and profitability driven decisions to propel the company. To Keith, it’s not about technology, it’s about business value - technology is just there to support!

Disruptive Innovation: A Secret to Unconventional Success

The business world is evolving. Business models, the face of retail and industries are being massively disrupted. Nontraditional competitors are emerging that challenge traditional industry that is slow to change. Large corporations must evolve and start thinking outside the box or else they will be left behind. Could your industry be the next multi-billion-dollar opportunity that is targeted by entrepreneurs such as Ido Leffler? Hear how you can embrace disruption, accept risk as a key part of innovation and learn how to attract emerging talent to your company. And of course, have incredible impact and a kickass time along the way.

How Mindfulness Helps Address Disruption, Stress & Safety

Mindfulness and situational awareness training have taken off globally, and for good reason. Disruption, mergers, and transformation are the new norm: your industry, Chemicals, is seeing a shakeup, including unprecedented acquisition and new competition emerging. In addition, across all industries, injury rates (and costs) are on the rise, with 91% of all workplace accidents occurring due to human error. Thousands of studies have shown the health and performance benefits of mindfulness training, including reducing the stress of ongoing disruption and reducing distraction-related injuries. In 2017, over half of the Fortune 500 will be embracing mindfulness as a competitive advantage. Companies including GE, PG&E and Ford look to it help with employee stress resiliency, performance and safety.

Join Whil’s Founder and CEO, Joe Burton, to learn how to reduce employee stress, increase resiliency and improve safety, focus and performance. He’ll also share the benefits for leadership, project governance and personal development. As a conference gift, all attendees will receive free access to Whil’s digital training apps.

Digital Transformation in a Changing Ecosystem

The chemical industry landscape of today is vastly different than a mere decade ago. New leaders from China and other emerging countries are poised to take over the top spot in an industry that has been historically dominated by Europe and the United States. The industry lines have blurred as traditional chemical companies get closer and closer to the end consumer in order to become more ‘demand driven’. And yet, despite the changes, there are a few constants – a relentless focus on operational efficiency, the growing complexity of regulations and a shrinking and retiring workforce. Join SAP’s Global VP of Chemicals, Thorsten Wenzel (Ph.D.), as he shares how SAP is helping to prepare chemical manufacturers for the digital economy through digital transformation. Thorsten will showcase how companies are leveraging S/4HANA with chemical best practices and approaching business networks in an entirely new light. He will demonstrate how S/4HANA can enable the digital enterprise and drive value creation.

Integrated Business Planning – The Next Frontier

The next frontier for business planning is Integrated Business Planning (IBP), a common platform and process that integrates multiple corporate functions with supply chain planning execution. SAP has been co-developing and piloting this advanced in-memory technology platform for the last several years with major consumer goods companies that provide integrated planning analytics, simulations and alert capability in a common business context for all functions. When combined with advance supply chain capabilities such as Demand Sensing and Control Tower Visibility, the SAP IBP platform becomes a very powerful business tool that positively impacts service, inventory and growth opportunities never realized before. However, significant change management has to be implemented to address new processes and people capabilities that are enabled by the new IBP platform and technology.

Ready for the Future: Transitioning to a Global IT Organization

Olin Corporation is a global company with corporate headquarters based in Clayton, Missouri and operations in more than 20 countries.  Our roots trace back to 1892 in the chemical industry, where today Olin is the leading manufacturer and seller of Chlor Alkali Products and Epoxy globally.

Driven in part by an acquisition in 2015, Olin is currently undertaking a program to integrate the company globally, driving the need to build a standard IT platform to support the businesses.  This major investment requires the IT organization must be ready to support the build, transition and run capability of IT services.

Today, Olin currently supports multiple IT operating models and organizations, consisting of 2 decentralized organizations and services for the heritage businesses, and one operating model and services provided by a 3rd party for an acquired business.  In addition, the current IT operating model was designed to support domestic US operations, but the combined company must provide round-the-clock global support.

Olin would like to share our journey to design a global IT operating model and supporting organization structure to support a capabilities needed for infrastructure services and global applications, including a new updated SAP and Manufacturing and Engineering platform.  Our journey includes understanding the capabilities we currently have, identifying where we have gaps, and defining how we will help our employees transition and transform to an organization that is “fit for purpose” for the future.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Leverage redesigned end-state IT operating model to enable the new Olin’s strategy and operation

  • End-state operating model to improve capabilities and service provided to Olin’s business

  • Implement governance processes to ensure ongoing and new initiatives align with IT and business strategies

Business Process Transformation: Unlocking Keys to Productivity

The Business Process Transformation (“BPT”) team was challenged to find ways to improve work processes with the Supply Chain Functional area. In addition, the BPT team was tasked with speeding up development time to keep up with business changes.  A change was needed to deliver productivity improvements for Supply Chain that generated results, so the business could take advantage of new Supply Chain capabilities.

A multi-year initiative was created to capture known value by tying together SAP capability with best-in-class business processes. The initiative drove a true “Process, People, and then Tool” methodology.  Several process procedures were adjusted and maturity assessed for each process area. Education “Events” were created that focused on internal learning and best practice sharing. Last, several business cases were developed that drove enhancements and standardization across the company.

An SAP suite of products including SAP APO and BI were utilized to create capabilities and validation of all efforts.

The result of this initiative was an improvement in our ability to create, develop, and launch process improvements at 4:1 improvement rate vs. the same process prior to BPT. Productivity improved by nearly all areas in which the initiatives were launched. In addition, we become better positioned to take on more complex application projects such as SAP IBP.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Process Improvements accelerated at 4:1 rate vs prior efforts.

  • Key Best Practices were standardized across the company including Supply Chain Metrics, Planning Predictability, and Enhancement creation

  • Enhancement Cycle Time decreased by nearly 6 week

  • Positioned Enterprise for PSOR Project

A Real Return: Using BW to find Savings at Bayer CropScience

CropScience, a Division of Bayer, had historically relied on a labor-intensive process when managing product returns related to their consignment business. The challenge in this return process came in time requirements, sampling, sample re-batching, building pallets, retesting product and revalidating the product for future use. The process of determining if the material could be blended, re-batched, and reused took a substantial amount of time and resources.

The challenge for Bayer was to reduce this investment in terms of both cost and turnaround time. Using (WM) Warehouse Management, Bayer found that they could the reduce time investment of this task by 50%, saving on labor and allowing staff to focus their time on other value added activities.

All told, this implementation saved significant quantities of pallet moves and time for multiple Bayer Sites. Join Bill Abernathy, Head of Logistics Excellence, Product Supply North America, as he describes how he and his team leveraged WM in unique way to achieve viable results with a real return.

Eastman Chemical’s Digital Transformation Journey Leveraging S/4HANA

Eastman and SAP are working together on defining a transformation journey moving Eastman into the Digital Age using the power and value that S/4HANA technology can deliver.   Through various value assessments and workshops, Eastman with the help of SAP have been defining the "art of possibility" by leveraging the new technology to envision the could-be processes enabling better decision capabilities between functional areas, senior management and their business leaders.

This was a true collaboration between SAP account and services teams and both the Eastman IT team and business leaders as well. Having the business be a key stakeholder in the process ensured that we were addressing real challenges and delivering real value to Eastman Chemical. We worked together using many of the principles of a Design Thinking workshop to stay focused on use cases that can bring the most value to the organization.

Implementation recommendations and roadmaps are being developed to start the journey enabling Eastman to move to the new SAP S/4HANA Enterprise Management.  Presentation will focus on details of our journey and decision on a phased Greenfield approach.  Progress to date and next steps will be outlined as well as strategy on leveraging SAP’s capabilities of providing real time analytics to make key business decisions and define the appropriate actions to execute the decisions.  Our vision cannot be achieved with existing platform and we need to venture into the new analytical processing paradigm.

A Supply Chain Transformed with SAP Integrated Business Planning

With sales in excess of $2.5 billion per year and plans for significant future growth, Albemarle Chemical knew that in order to keep up with such fast-paced environment, they had to be able to develop and implement a strong, structured and sustainable S&OP process and tools across global business units and its divisions.

Following an Agile methodology, Intrigo designed, deployed and provided global support for a Supply Chain Transformation Project that included rolling out SAP S&OP on HANA to 8 Business Units within the Catalyst GBU. The IBP Platform was leveraged by Intrigo to solve Albemarle’s planning challenges. This delivered solution addressed the challenges of granular data vs. reliable plan outputs, while also ensuring long term sustainability and success.

Join Rodney Nijoka and Intrigo to understand how Intrigo has enabled and solidified Albemarle’s S&OP process by building out a reliable and extendable Supply Demand Balancing component.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Achieved sustaining inventory reductions in working capital

  • Improvement in customer service

  • Standardization and efficiency improvement across supply chain

Using SAP ERP Effectively for Running an Efficient Supply Chain in the Chemical Industry

Attend this session to understand how we optimized SAP-ERP to reduce offline manual processes to address the customer service and supply chain business needs.

Through an SAP optimization effort we implemented a solution to get timely production information into SAP for continuous and batch production units and enabled planning and ATP functions. We also implemented an automatic reorder point planning function at the terminals to systemically align those with the inventory targets set by the business.

The daily production exceptions were handled during the month, rather than waiting for the end of the month to discover those. This reduced dependency and complexity of the month end closing process. The integrated production, inventory, accounting and sales functions eliminated some offline processes and increased staff productivity. All these business benefits were realized by using the SAP-ERP software more effectively, not by adding other software or solutions.

Innovative Way to Quickly Absorb a Major Merger or Acquisition with SAP S/4HANA & Central Finance

CF Industries is a global leader in nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing and distribution. They own and operate world-scale nitrogen complexes and service agricultural and industrial customers through their best-in-class distribution system.  In 2015, CF Industries entered into an agreement to merge with OCI N.V., a leading global producer of nitrogen and methanol.  As the result of this merger, CF was going from one main ERP system to five ERP systems all with different financial structures, running on different software, supporting different processes, and operating in very different ways.  Their goal was to achieve financial excellence across all the systems, consolidate the different businesses, be as non-disruptive to the existing systems, and achieve all this as quickly as possible.  To do this, they looked to implement SAP S/4HANA in a Central Finance deployment model as they absorbed and consolidated the new company into their landscape. While this merger was eventually abandoned due to federal restrictions, the process that CF Industries undertook is an innovative way to prepare for successful M&A activities.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Non-disruptive approach to M&A activity utilizing state of the art S/4HANA

  • Financial organization consolidation leading to less financial resources to prepare financial reports

  • Faster reporting, intercompany reconciliation and close cycles

Revolutionize Your In-Transit inventory Process

Like most companies these days, Ascend Performance Materials moves many products between various physical locations and legal entities across state lines and continents.  In the past, the inventory in-transit between company owned sites was in a virtual no-man’s land, in-transit value was a calculated figure that was hard to track and reconcile.

With Enhance Pack 5 or higher SAP provided a revolutionary new approach to process, track and report the In Transit Inventory during Stock Transport Order Processing. With the Stock In Transit (SIT) functionality SAP ensures that the ownership of goods is transferred directly from one entity to the next while still keeping track when they physically arrive at the destination.

In transit inventory is no longer a calculated figure but a tightly controlled part of the inventory from both financial and logistics point of view. The new functionality also enabled us to simplify the STO creation process, ensured that batch information is automatically transferred between locations and also to introduce a return process to manage adjustments and corrections on the same order.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Tight control of the physical and financial flow of inventory between own sites

  • Standardize and improve Inventory reporting

  • Standardize STO creation and goods receiving processes

Ask SAP: Supply Chain Complexity in the Modern World

Using Track & Trace to Recover Costs at Air Products & Chemicals

Air Products’ Industrial Gases business had a system for returnable containers – containers (gas cylinders) that are owned by the company and used to deliver product to end customers.  These containers are returned by customers and, reused in future shipments. Prior to 2012, there was no easy way for Air Products to track these containers, which were commonly treated as “fungible” assets, and therefore no way for Air Products to identify the location of a specific container or recover containers that were never returned.

In 2012, Air Products created a track and trace system, using 3-D barcodes and RFID tags to serialize their containers and a mobile app to scan and upload data in real-time. Through this process, Air Products was able to identify a container’s status and location throughout the supply chain.  In certain geographies, Air Products learned that they had significantly less containers than they thought - containers that were being “borrowed” by third party agents and not returned as expected.

By instituting a track and trace system, Air Products was not only able to increase cost savings by recovering lost containers, but has also been able to influence customer and third-party behavior regarding returning containers. Join Mark Binnig as he discusses how Air Products has been able to improve their container deliveries and service levels while reducing “leakage” through mobile and real time track-and-trace capabilities.

End-to-End Real-Time Visibility Delivers Optimal Logistics Operations – A Case Study

Our logistics team faced challenges in executing increasingly complex shipments using the sub-optimal, semi-automated and dis-jointed processes delivered through multiple systems including SAP ERP. The ‘need for speed’ from the higher expectations of customers and the new regulations related to DG goods made the situation worse for the in-house team just to keep the light on.

A major initiative was launched 2 years back to implement flexible and optimal processes using SAP ERP tools to eliminate 3rd party systems, increase RF scanning and integrate freight carriers like FedEx, UPS, DHL, TNT, DB Schenker and other LTL carriers. Special attention was paid to the DG shipment processes and other compliance requirements. Just last month, a 2-step consolidation/deconsolidation shipment process was implemented using FedEx IGD service for customers in Canada with full integration into in-house SAP system.

A SAP based Logistics Dashboard was developed and deployed for 360-degree view of the operations very quickly.

The result of this initiative is that we are able to achieve improvements in a number of KPIs like shipment accuracy, Inventory accuracy, cycle time of the internal operations and freight costs. In addition, we have full visibility of our shipments all the way to the customer with a record of ‘Proof of delivery’ by the carrier. We also provide our customers the shipment information for their tracking.

Real-time connectivity of our SAP system to the carriers has also eliminated errors in shipments caused by restrictions by carriers.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Improvements in shipment and physical inventory accuracies

  • Real time visibility of shipments from the start to delivery to the customer including Proof-of-Delivery(POD)

  • Freight Cost optimization and savings
