    Optimizing Field Assets and Inventory through SAP’s Asset Management for Oil and Gas (AMSOG) Solution

    Chesapeake is making improvements to its working capital and overall management of equipment at the well site through SAP AMSOG. An enhanced user-interface along with additional upstream O&G functionality has enabled our field personnel to have transparency to our assets and improve the timeliness / data accuracy of material transactions across our network of wells. And a robust pricing engine within AMSOG allows for improvements in the operational accounting of controllable equipment.
    Achieving these results was accomplished through a disciplined focus on fit-for-purpose business processes design. Next we worked closely with SAP’s product development team to ensure AMSOG met all of these requirements. Finally, several rounds of functional integration testing and user training were completed to prepare the organization for go live.
    The improved functionality and dashboard that AMSOG provides gives upstream oil and gas clients a powerful new and intuitive way to manage equipment and inventory.

    Transform Trash to Treasure; the Journey of Maintenance Data

    With the markets challenging organizations to work leaner to do more with less people, the data needed to become a focus within the organization. We always had the data available, but the cleanliness, user obtainment, and change management was something to be desired.  We needed to focus on the clean up and continued improvement with the change management process to verify the data would continue to be treasured once the effort was made to cleanse it.

    With the implementation of SAP Master Data Governance for Functional Locations and Equipment, as the primary focus, we were able to transform, rig by rig, the data into treasured information.

    Business Intelligence to the Future

    Noble's business departments were searching for methods to create their own self-service analytics with easy to use visuals tools for reporting while leveraging governed data. The market has a tremendous amount of offerings which allow the visualization layer with simple uploads of content from excel, csv, etc. However, the governed data was the challenge to overcome. The off-the-shelf products allow the analysts to define their own metrics; while providing the flexibility to leverage other external data sources to manipulate/optimize the source content.  By leveraging the governed data sources converted to HANA Optimized data models, and in some cases virtualizing the data from external sources to eliminate data redundancy, we are gaining performance efficiency while providing self service analytics using Lumira. Design Studio remains the toolset for the final published reports, assuring the organization the governed data remained constant.
    The Noble technical teams worked through an internal project to deploy BW on Hana in late 2016; with 2017 focused on new tool capabilities leveraging the in-memory capabilities. With the powerful combination of system performance, functional capabilities, and highly motivated teams working collaboratively, Noble is able to achieve governed analytics satisfying the range of ad-hoc analysis to structured reporting.

    A day in the life of a scheduler is filled with activities related to production plans, pipeline schedules, inventory and operating capacity reports, daily, weekly, and monthly planning, interactions with supply managers, traders, and third party pipeline and terminal companies – all while making sure the right product in the right amount gets to the right place at the right time. Each of these tasks and interactions can and do come in or require different data formats, reporting formats, and timing of delivery yet the output must be standard, consistent, timely, and accurate. Because of so many moving parts an inordinate amount of manual effort and time is required to properly stage the data to ensure consistent results. This ultimately leads to each desk developing a “personality” of the scheduler leading those “data wrangling” activities with very little time to focus on product optimization and value-added activities and also leads to different work practices, processes and tools across the product supply organization. In order to simplify and standardize the whole of product supply, Valero and Capgemini have jointly created an architecture and implemented a solution that creates a standard interface leveraging tools the schedulers are already familiar with, while integrating a number of existing SAP systems in a way that minimizes impact on the IT organization while accomplishing the objectives of the business, including TSW/SPW, BW, HANA, and BOBJ tools.

    Shell Reduces Complexity and Cost by Moving US and Canadian Revenue Accounting into SAP PRA and CPRA

    Shell implemented SAP PRA Production Revenue Accounting 2.0 in 2016 as a part of their strategy to consolidate into an integrated SAP environment and eliminate legacy applications.     Streamlining AFE Business Processes with Fiori

    QEP simplified and streamlined its Approval for Expenditure (AFE) process using Fiori. With Project System (PS) configuration and standard SAP workflow at its core, custom Fiori screens present AFE users with an intuitive and predictable alternative to complicated SAPGUI-based transactions such as CJ20N, CJ30/CJ40, CJ18, Business Workplace, and others.

    A post go-live survey of 300+ AFE users revealed that SAP usability ranked #1 as the highest perceived negative with the new ERP system. Mainstream AFE users often interact infrequently with SAP, generally responding to workflow assignments, DOA approval requests, or simply querying AFE actual-to-budget performance. Confronted with scattered screens and Project System's unfamiliar nomenclature, AFE processing became seriously painful and inefficient.
    Following an adapted Agile approach, QEP conducted joint development sprints beginning with highly leveraged functions such as AFE querying, budgeting, and approving. Subsequent sprints rounded out a more complete solution for creating, updating, supplementing, attaching, and partner reporting. Using continuous user feedback, the development team refined and tuned throughout each sprint's lifecycle.

    In a 2016 technology survey, Fiori received the highest rating of all SAP applications in-use at QEP.

    Shell Reduces Complexity and Cost by Moving US and Canadian Revenue Accounting into SAP PRA and CPRA

    Shell implemented SAP PRA Production Revenue Accounting 2.0 in 2016 as a part of their strategy to consolidate into an integrated SAP environment and eliminate legacy applications.     Providing Critical context for insight to action with SAP Fiori & SAP HANA

    At Pacific Drilling we own and operate drill ships that are located in the middle of the ocean. Maintaining these assets properly is of utmost importance for safety and revenue efficiency. During market downturns, optimizing these processes and making informed key decisions helps drive the appropriate efficiency and cost control gains.
    The challenge we faced was providing the appropriate context to Operations Management with regards to PR approvals. Ops management was struggling to understand demand requirements (on PR’s), often having to utilize multiple SAP sessions and/or transactions to view a variety of data in order to make an informed decision.
    In order to solve this issue, we utilized the PR Approval App available on Fiori and extended the functionality to provide key contextual data. Utilizing the query capability we have with SAP Hana we were able to provide additional details at time of approval including:

    • Current stock situation and MRP Settings for Material
    • Open Order and Logistics Information
    • Utilization/Usage Statistic for Material
    • Open Demand detail (per individual Work Order)
    • Drill down capability into applicable Work Orders

    This information is available at the time of PR Approval and in one place. The result of this effort is that users are able to easily make informed decisions without having to use multiple transactions/sessions which has a lot of benefits including:

    • Performance: Using Fiori and having contextual data available at time of transaction allows the approval to happen more efficiently, freeing up users time to focus on other tasks
    • Optimized Inventory levels and more efficient maintenance planning as having the appropriate context allows a more informed decision to be made

    The Reporting Onion

    As an organization matures in its EAM process, so do its reporting requirements. A key benefit of any SAP implementation is the reporting it provides. Reporting should never be a rigid or painstaking process. On the contrary, it should be the result of excellent Master Data organized in a standard manner that provides fluid and useful information to any user at any level of the organization.

    The best advice I can give anyone starting an EAM implementation is to focus on master data from the beginning. SAP’s incredible wealth of data points allows reports to be manipulated on the fly to answer questions that were once tedious to research and semi-reliable at best. Once an organization sets standards and understands what each piece of master data brings to the “reporting table”, reporting can actually become a positive and exciting process.

    To explain how Master Data works at Denbury, our team developed and coined the phrase:

    The Reporting Onion

    “Reporting so good, it makes you Cry.”

    The onion is the body of reporting that contains the layers of master data we use to gather information about the assets we operate. In the past, an enormous General Ledger (G/L) and thousands of cost centers were relied on to describe work being done in operations. Naturally, coding errors, inconsistencies and interpretations of what G/L & cost center combination to use caused many inconsistencies. To gather useful asset based information, end users were required manually review invoices and create spreadsheets to analyze spend. The introduction of SAP EAM and strong master data changed this for Denbury.

    Now, simple processes like building a work order, procuring goods and services & confirming time bring a plethora of master data that is used to make quick, reliable and useful reports. End users are unknowingly building great reports simply by doing their everyday jobs. The master data is built once and the results are consistent, reliable and repeatable reports that can be sliced and diced to tell a story that was only once dreamt about.

    Noble's business departments were searching for methods to create their own self-service analytics with easy to use visuals tools for reporting while leveraging governed data. The market has a tremendous amount of offerings which allow the visualization layer with simple uploads of content from excel, csv, etc. However, the governed data was the challenge to overcome. The off-the-shelf products allow the analysts to define their own metrics; while providing the flexibility to leverage other external data sources to manipulate/optimize the source content.  By leveraging the governed data sources converted to HANA Optimized data models, and in some cases virtualizing the data from external sources to eliminate data redundancy, we are gaining performance efficiency while providing self service analytics using Lumira. Design Studio remains the toolset for the final published reports, assuring the organization the governed data remained constant.
    The Noble technical teams worked through an internal project to deploy BW on Hana in late 2016; with 2017 focused on new tool capabilities leveraging the in-memory capabilities. With the powerful combination of system performance, functional capabilities, and highly motivated teams working collaboratively, Noble is able to achieve governed analytics satisfying the range of ad-hoc analysis to structured reporting.

    Cyber security technology does an amazing job of protecting company assets, but it can be a step behind our adversaries. This ultimately leaves us with the last line of defense as our end users…but are our end users even aware that they have that responsibility and do they know what we are asking them to defend and how?

    This presentation will share our journey of moving from the scare tactics approach of cyber security into shedding some light on the challenges that we face, what we are doing to protect our assets and how the end user can help. Through leveraging a new approach to user awareness, some very inexpensive training software (~$100), and some unique incentives for participation, we have seen our end users become more cyber aware at work and at home.  This has resulted in an increase in reported phishing attempts and a reduction in infected machines.

In fact, they didn’t even know how to provide the data broken out into field operations relevant hierarchies. Enter business objects…by fully utilizing modern analytics technology we delivered fully field relevant P&L and LOE data, broken down in such a way that the field could take ownership of the data easily, while simultaneously allowing them to take a deep dive as needed into individual costs (at the invoice level) for each well. The result has been an expansion of accountability, a field organization that can have each lease operator fully owning the performance, cost, and results of each and every well.

    On the fringe of moving to S4 HANA we have created an Enterprise Information Management Department to ensure our data migration is as accurate and efficient as possible.
